External Job Code: CQ intern
Area of Interest: Editorial
City: Washington
State / Province: District of Columbia
Job Ad: Congressional Quarterly’s internship program offers an exciting opportunity to work in a fast-paced news organization in Washington, D.C.
CQ treats its interns like entry-level staff members -- they don’t make copies, fetch coffee or answer phones. Interns work closely with CQ’s editors and reporters and have the opportunity to write stories and obtain clips that will help advance their careers. Several past interns have returned to CQ as staff members.
CQ’s internship program is competitive. Interns generally come to CQ with a profound interest, and at least some experience, in journalism and/or government. Preference is given to juniors and seniors in college, recent graduates and graduate students.
CQ interns perform a range of tasks depending on the newsroom’s needs in a given semester. These tasks can include covering committee markups and hearings, attending policy events around town or conducting legislative research. During certain times of the year, interns may work with the team that publishes the biennial Politics in America book, which includes information on each member of Congress. CQ also accepts interns for the online and multimedia teams, legislative tracking team, copy desk, and other departments, based on the skills of the applicant.
Summer interns typically work full-time (40 hours weekly). Spring and Fall interns are welcome and encouraged to work full-time if their schedules permit, but many work two to three full days weekly due to school commitments.
In addition to their duties, interns meet CQ staff members from various departments, including several “brown bag” lunches during the summer. Interns will also make at least one trip to Capitol Hill with one of CQ’s reporters, who will show them the ropes and help them navigate the Capitol complex.
Application Process:
Applicants for internships should submit a resume and may be asked to submit at least two writing samples to the hiring manager upon request.
In 200 words or fewer, please tell us about an interesting experience or difficult decision you’ve faced while reporting. Use the notes section of this application.
Before obtaining an internship, qualifying candidates will be given an interview and a writing test.
Applications are evaluated on a rolling basis. Applicants for summer internships must apply by February 28, and decisions will be made by early- to mid-April. Spring applicants should apply by November 1 of the preceding year. Fall applicants should apply no later than July 31.
Each application will be evaluated against the minimum job qualifications identified in the job posting above. Failure to return the completed application will negatively impact your candidacy for the position. By returning the completed application, you will be considered an applicant, but it does not guarantee an interview.
The Economist Group values diversity. We are committed to equal opportunities and creating an inclusive environment for all our employees. We welcome applicants regardless of ethnic origin, gender, religious beliefs, disability, sexual orientation or age.

DAAD internXchange Summer Internship Program
Summer Internship Program in Berlin for American and Canadian Students of Journalism or Communications at the International Center for Journalism at Freie Universität Berlin
June 3–August 16, 2013:
DAAD and the Freie Universität Berlin (named in 2012 as one of the "universities of excellence" in Germany, and in 2012 one of the best 100 universities in the world) have developed a unique program to provide outstanding young journalism students with an opportunity to immerse themselves in the society, culture, values, and political attitudes in Germany. During this time of transition and change in transatlantic relations and the German-American relationship, this program will expose American students with a particular interest in Germany to its changing global political role.
The program consists of two complementary segments. The first six weeks will be spent at the International Center for Journalism of the Freie Universität Berlin, where participants will expand their academic understanding of the politics, society and culture of Germany and the country's current media structure and working conditions of journalists. With these theoretical building blocks in place, participants subsequently embark on an intensive five-week internship with a German newspaper, (online) magazine, TV or radio station, press or PR agency. During the academic part of the program students will take a one-week educational tour within Germany, along with young journalists from the Independent States of the former Soviet Union.
The deadline to apply is February 24, 2013.

The interns will contribute to AP’s text, video, photos and interactive report for 12 weeks this summer. Although a primary format should be declared – depending on interest and ability – the internships may provide experience and training in all four. Editors will train interns on such areas as interview techniques, sourcing, databases and AP style. Interns will be expected to become familiar with - and abide by - the AP’s statement of values and principles governing ethics.
Staff photographers will supervise interns on visual storytelling techniques. Where possible interns will accompany staff photographers on assignments, assist with arrangements in the field, and shoot photos. Interns will assist in the production of video stories, including non-linear editing and writing story summaries and scripts for broadcast. They will research and set up video news and feature stories and occasionally join location shoots, or do their own shooting, if they possess the required skills. Interns may also assist with content management and translations.
Interns will assist in creating interactive stories, told through multimedia elements such as graphics, data visualizations, 3D animations, photos and videos. Interns should be familiar with HTML and have knowledge about web standards. The National Council Fellowships:
Washington, DC Summer Internship Program June 3, 2013 - August 9, 2013
The National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations' Washington, DC Summer Internship Program offers undergraduate and graduate students a ten-week professional, academic, and career opportunity internship in the nation's capital. The program features a demanding mix of professional involvement, intellectual challenge, career exploration, and cultural encounters designed to provide interns with a rich and varied experience during their time in Washington.
Professional workplace experience: Interns are placed with one of over a dozen Near East and Arab world-related organizations in Washington, D.C., where they are expected to work 35-40 hours/week under the direct supervision of their host organizations.
Academic seminars: Interns take part in twice weekly seminar sessions designed to provide them with greater depth of knowledge about the Arab world, to underscore the cultural, economic, and political diversity of Arab states, and to explore the intricacies of Arab-U.S. relations.
Site visits: Interns receive a behind-the-scenes look at many of the central institutions of federal government, national security policymaking, international diplomacy, and international business.
Sponsorship: The program is administered by National Council professionals and staff, together with more than two dozen of America's foremost scholars and leading foreign affairs practitioners. The programs, activities, and functions represented by the organizations and corporations that provide the professional work experience component of the program are varied. Included among placements in recent years have been educational development and exchange organizations, bimonthly and quarterly publications, humanitarian relief groups, broadcasting networks, area studies centers, international transportation companies, foreign trade associations, peace and justice advocacy groups, and a variety of non-governmental organizations.
About the Program:
The National Council's Summer Internship Program offers professional work experiences combined with twice weekly evening seminars that bring academic experts and experienced foreign policy practitioners to meet with the interns in candid off-the-record discussions and freewheeling question and answer sessions. Our goals are: (1) to provide a realistic Washington, D.C. work experience that will pave the way to career development; (2) to provide interns with first-hand experience behind-the-scenes of the foreign policy analysis and advocacy process in Washington, D.C.; (3) to provide a strong academic component dealing with U.S. political, economic, and cultural relations with Arabia and the Gulf region; (4) to help participants begin the process of career networking by introducing them to working professionals in government, business, journalism, and NGOs; and, (5) to highlight the wide range of career opportunities awaiting those who aspire to work in the field of U.S.-Arab relations as well as to provide counseling on the graduate school and fellowship application processes.
As complements to the program, interns will also be exposed to D.C. in a less formal manner via films, cultural events, embassy and museum visits, off-the-record conversations with former diplomats, group dinners, and suggestions for exploring the sights and sounds of Washington, D.C. This allows students not only to experience living and working in the city but also encourages them to appreciate the cultural diversity of the urban environment and the exciting cultural, educational, and recreational opportunities available in the Nation's Capital.
Cost and Fellowship Stipend:
A $125 non-refundable program fee must be submitted with the application. This fee helps to defray the costs of administering the summer internship program and the accompanying seminar presentations. Internship program participants, upon successful fulfillment of the program's academic and internship requirements, receive a $1,000 fellowship stipend.

Interested undergraduate or graduate students are asked to submit the following materials prior to the application deadline in order to be considered for acceptance into the Summer Internship Program:

UNPAID INTERNSHIPMy name is Patrick Teale and I'm the lead baseball publisher on Scout.com, which is affiliated with Fox Sports. I wanted to contact you to see if you could help us out. We wanted to see if you could identify any potential writers at Berry College who would be interested in interning with us this coming season by helping us cover the Rome Braves, the low-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. The duties would include attending the Rome home games, interviewing the players and coaches, and writing feature articles for our Braves web site.
It is an unpaid internship but several of our former interns on the network have gone on to bigger and better things. One of our interns on our sister site, Kelli Polson on PinstripesPlus.com, went to to work for the national Fox News channel upon graduation. Another former intern, Frankie Piliere, went on to scout for the Texas Rangers before becoming the lead baseball prospect analyst for AOL Fanhouse, and is now one of the lead baseball analysts for Fox Sports. And we've had several former interns go on to get jobs with MLB.com, including Evan Drellich and Jon Star.
I'm sure your student writers would really enjoy this internship opportunity and we're looking for two or three qualified candidates. The internship runs from the first week in June through the first week in September. Would you mind spreading the word and having any interested candidates contacting me?
I would greatly appreciate any help you could lend.
